Chrysler 200 and 300 First to Get ?S? Treatment

Between its square-jawed 2011 300 sedan, the suddenly stylish Sebring-cum-200 sedan/convertible line, and the re-engineered Town & Country minivan, Chrysler?s 2011 product line is its strongest in a generation. Building on this brand makeover, Chrysler hopes to expand its appeal to a younger, hipper market by offering special “S” trim levels for its cars.
While “S” [...]

A New NASCAR Season Spawns Hope, Optimism and Nervousness

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. -- Painted high on the walls of the sprawling setup room at the Stewart-Haas Racing team shop here are inspirational quotes from Winston Churchill, Thomas Paine, Lyndon B. Johnson and Vince Lombardi, among others, as well as Satchel Paige, the legendary African-American baseball player who made his name as a pitcher rather than a great politician or statesman.

Yet it is Paige's quote -- "Don't look back, something might be gaining on you" -- that seems to best typify the dead-of-winter mood in the race shops scattered around the greater Charlotte area.

Nearly all the teams and drivers are once again filled with hope and enthusiasm, but everyone has to be wondering nonetheless how their season will play out. Will they be competitive right out of the box? Have other teams gained some kind of a little advantage?

"It's just who made the bigger gains" during the off-season and preparing for 2011, said Tony Stewart as the annual Charlotte Motor Speedway media tour, with some 200 media members in attendance, made a stop at his Kannapolis shop Monday afternoon for a visit with him and teammate Ryan Newman.

Chip Ganassi, co-owner of Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, echoed the thought earlier Monday during a luncheon with the team. Although both of his drivers, Jamie McMurray and Juan Pablo Montoya, won races in 2010, "there are lots of places we can improve," he said. "You're looking at that all the time. It's a constant process of looking at yourself and looking at the team."

Schumacher backs rear wing rules

Michael Schumacher believes the FIA's implementation of the moveable wings rules this year will be a success - because overtaking is still not going to be too easy. As AUTOSPORT exclusively revealed on Thursday, the FIA has decided to limit use of the moveable wing to a 600-metre zone at the end of a track's main straight ? but is ready to tweak that distance if passing is too easy or still too hard. F1 technical figures reckon that the overtaking area may be too short to start with ? but there is general agreement that the moveable wing rules should not make overtaking too easy.

Tony Stewart on Way Back to US After Reported Scuffle in Australia

Two-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart is reportedly en route to the United States a day after reports that he scuffled with a track owner during his final weekend racing in Australia.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Stewart threw his helmet at track co-owner Brett Morris during an alleged dispute over track conditions at Sydney Speedway. The newspaper said Stewart received a black eye in return from Morris, who the paper described as "not slight in size.''

Stewart's public relations manager Mike Arning said Saturday he was still trying to sort through the news but had spoken with Stewart, who was reportedly detained briefly by the local Rosehill police department for questioning about the incident. Although he was released and cleared for his already-scheduled departure Saturday, the paper says a local official confirmed there is ongoing investigation..

Stewart has been in Australia for the past four weeks -- the second consecutive year he and several other prominent American sprint car drivers have spent the off-season racing sprint cars.

The owner-driver is scheduled to drive his No. 14 Mobil 1-Office Depot Chevrolet in a three-day test session at Daytona International Speedway beginning Thursday.

NASCAR to Use Smaller Restrictor Plate at Next Week's Daytona Test

DaytonaTeams will be issued smaller restrictor plates for NASCAR's upcoming Jan. 20-22 Goodyear Tire Test at Daytona International Speedway. And at least one Sprint Cup Series crew chief thinks it's a good idea to slow the cars on the newly paved 2.5-mile superspeedway.

"I think the decision was made to slow down the speeds because the speeds were too high at the first test,'' said Pat Tryson, veteran crew chief of the Michael Waltrip Racing No. 56 NAPA Auto Parts Toyota.

"It's a good move on the side of safety because no one wants to see a car go airborne at the potential speeds that could be generated with the plate they had last month. It will be better for the driver and better for the fans in the stands. Safety always comes first.''

The new carburetor restrictor plate will have a 29/32-inch hole compared to the 30/32-inch hole the cars used last month in the first major test session on the fresh pavement. Speeds reached 197 mph in December with 17-car drafts.

"By slowing down the cars, it will make the draft bigger and tighter,'' Tryson said. " Before with a little more power, the cars would spread out a little bit. I think now, we can expect to see the cars a lot closer together and more in one pack versus two, three or four.

"It's going to make for some great racing for sure because I expect to see more three, maybe four-wide racing at Daytona which is exactly what we saw at Talladega Superspeedway. It's going to be a lot of fun for everyone to watch."

Pirelli upbeat about tyre progress

Pirelli is confident that its new Formula 1 tyres are in good shape for the new season following its first testing with 2011 cars in Valencia this week. Although cold weather and the unique characteristics of the Valencia circuit meant there were high levels of tyre degradation, Pirelli thinks its plans to be aggressive with its tyre choice this year are on course. The Italian tyre manufacturer's motorsport boss Paul Hembery has said that the test went to plan - and that degradation was to be expected considering Pirelli's plans to make tyres more on edge this year

Mark Martin to Race in All Three NASCAR Series in 2011

Just when we thought Mark Martin might be winding up his long and storied career as a NASCAR driver, he's decided to jump back in with both feet in 2011 by running races in all three of NASCAR's national touring series.

In his final, lame-duck year with Hendrick Motorsports in the Sprint Cup series, Martin has decided to also run selected Nationwide series and Camping World Truck series events for Turner Motorsports.

Martin will drive the No. 32 Dollar General Chevrolet in Nationwide races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Ca., Michigan International Speedway and Kentucky Speedway, with Trent Owens serving as his crew chief, the team announced Wednesday.

Martin will also drive the No. 32 Chevy Silverado truck in NASCAR Truck series races at Michigan as well as Pocono Raceway.

"I'm excited to be running back in the Nationwide and Truck Series again," said Martin. "Everyone at Dollar General and Turner Motorsports has been great and I'm looking forward to hitting the track with them next year. Working with Turner, I get to extend my relationship with Chevrolet and continue to have Hendrick horsepower under the hood, which is really, really good."

Mini adds new JCW pack, Clubman Hampton for 2011

Mini Clubman Hampton Special Edition

Mini has confirmed a slew of upcoming models, including the Clubman Hampton special edition that recently leaked onto the web. The company says that the tricked out Clubman will be joined by a new John Cooper Works pack for the Cooper S, Cooper S Convertible and Clubman S, and that European buyers will be able to lay their mitts on a sportier diesel model as well.

As part of the Mini Yours customization program, the Clubman Hampton is set to wear unique Reef Blue Metallic paint with Damson Red stripes and mirror caps outside with special wheels to suit. Jump indoors and the interior is swaddled in uprated seats with red piping and contrasting orange stitching. Classy.

Meanwhile, those with a penchant for speed can turn to the new John Cooper Works Pack. Thanks to some tweaking on the engine management, the Mini engineers managed to pull an additional 16 horsepower from the turbo four-cylinder, bumping the final figure just shy of 200 ponies and 199 pound-feet of torque. Mini says that the 0-62 mph run can be tackled in as little as 6.8 seconds, and that a special exhaust and lightweight alloy wheels are also part of the package.

Finally, European buyers can get excited about the addition of the new Cooper SD. The pint-sized oil burner packs 143 horsepower from a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel mill and 225 pound-feet of torque. Along with all that grunt, the SD comes with start/stop, brake regeneration and electronic power steering to eek out as much fuel economy as possible. The 0-62 mph dash takes around 8.1 seconds while churning out 65.7 UK miles per gallon. Spend a little time with a calculator, and you'll find that the number averages out to around 54.7 mpg on the U.S. cycle.

So far, there's no indication that the Cooper SD will show up in the States.

Hit the jump for the full press release.

Renault to give junior drivers F1 mileage

Renault plans to give its academy drivers Formula 1 mileage in older-spec cars this season. The team unveiled five reserve drivers along with its R31 car at Valencia today, with Bruno Senna and Romain Grosjean joining the previously-announced Fairuz Fauzy and retained back-ups Ho-Pin Tung and Jan Charouz. Team boss Eric Boullier says he always planned to have a deep roster of drivers this year, and that the Renault academy is intended to prepare these drivers for racing in Formula 1 should the opportunity arise

Fun With Subaru?s Badge of Ownership

Most every new-car unveil in the last decade has at some point used the phrase ?active lifestyle.? Rather than hammer those words in its advertising or repeat them ad nauseum in press conferences, though, Subaru is letting its owners advertise their own activities with ?lifestyle icons? that accompany its ?badge of ownership.? The badge of [...]

McDreamy gains credibility with podium finish

It was no fluke when Patrick Dempsey led laps overnight in the Rolex 24 at Daytona. The actor best known as McDreamy from his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd on Greys Anatomy has worked hard at his racing career. The validation came last weekend when Dempsey led his first laps in the Grand-Am Series and helped his race team earn its first podium with a third-place finish Sunday in the...
