Marquez wins close Moto2 battle
Marc Marquez held off Stefan Bradl and Bradley Smith to win a spectacularly close Moto2 race at Mugello, giving the 125cc champion a second straight victory in the intermediate category. Just 0.227 seconds covered the three riders at the line, as they broke away from what had been a five-bike battle also involving Alex de Angelis and Andrea Iannone. Far and away, BMW has commissioned more Art Cars than any other manufacturer. But the German automaker doesn't have exclusive purview over the realm, and this one is quite different.
This is the first art car based on an F1 racer. The Force India team commissioned renowned automotive artist Dexter Brown to apply his wares to the VJM01-05 which Giancarlo Fisichella drove - rather unspectacularly, mind you, without a single championship point finish - in 2008, the year before he scored that remarkable second place at the 2009 Belgian Grand Prix and subsequently signed with Ferrari.
The result is quite innovative, and will be auctioned for charity, complete with the signatures of various F1 drivers and personalities, Bernie Ecclestone first among them. The project will also be commemorated with a special book to be published by Opus - the same publishing house behind the $275,000 Ferrari book. Valentino Rossi admitted after qualifying 12th at Mugello that he had hoped Ducati's problems would be less apparent at its home track. Harvey scores first British F3 win
Jack Harvey claimed his maiden British Formula 3 win from this morning's reversed grid race at the Nurburgring. The 2010 Formula BMW Europe runner-up made a lightning start from the front row of the grid and outdragged poleman Rupert Svendsen-Cook on the run down to the first turn. The race was neutralised at the end of the opening lap, when Fortec's Fahmi Ilyas spun on the approach to the Ford-Kurve and took out Hitech's Pietro Fantin.

Ragan wins Daytona crash fest
David Ragan claimed his maiden NASCAR Sprint Cup Series win in a close and wild finish on Saturday night at Daytona. Bortolotti extends lead with victory
Mirko Bortolotti claimed his third Formula 2 win of the season by leading from lights to flag in this afternoon's opening race at the Nurburgring. Did you know that just the steering wheel in a modern F1 racer costs about as much as your car? That a driver will lose about four and a half pounds over the course of a grand prix? Or that an F1 car gets about 3.1 miles to the gallon?
The numbers in Formula 1 racing are absolutely staggering, but fortunately, our friends over at Netcars have mapped it all out in the most user-friendly way possible: that's right, an infographic.
Some other tidbits of information: an F1 car takes just 1.7 seconds to hit 62 miles per hour from a standstill, and can top out around 257 mph. And to slow the car from 200 mph coming down a straightaway to 115 for a sweeping corner, it takes about as much force as it would to make an elephant jump 33 feet in the air. Seriously. Patrick stars in Daytona Nationwide
Danica Patrick said she enjoyed Friday's NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Daytona, where despite a last-lap crash she was classified 10th, having led the event. The IndyCar star, who looks likely to make a full-time move to NASCAR next year, was among the leading contenders for victory in the 100-lap event, where she led 13 laps while being up front five different times.

Menu leads another Chevy grid sweep
Alain Menu has taken pole for tomorrow's opening World Touring Car Championship race in Porto, leading yet another Chevrolet 1-2-3 in qualifying. Team-mate Yvan Muller had been on top for most of the session, but Menu produced a stunning 2m04.946s lap in the final minutes to put himself 0.3 seconds clear of the Frenchman. Lamborghinis dominate first race
Markus Winkelhock and Marc Basseng moved into the GT1 World Championship points lead by taking a comfortable win in the Navarra qualifying race. Basseng had followed the sister All-Inkl Lamborghini of Nicky Pastorelli in the early stages, relentlessly looking for opportunities to pass his team-mate. He had to wait until the pitstops, when coming in immediately to hand over to Winkelhock worked perfectly, with a quick out-lap for the erstwhile DTM racer putting him into the lead ahead of Pastorelli's partner Dominik Schwager when the second Lamborghini pitted a lap later.

BMW has released information on a pair of new special-edition 3 Series models available in Europe. The 2012 3 Series Exclusive Edition will offer buyers new 18-inch, lightweight V-Spoke wheels as well as a unique Mineral Grey exterior paint. Inside, the cabin is wrapped in Dakota leather in either Pearl Grey with contrast stitching or black. Bamboo grain anthracite wood trim adds a bit of specialness as well.
Of greater interest to enthusiasts is news that BMW will also offer customers a new 2012 3 Series M Sport Edition with a slightly sharper performance edge. BMW turned its M engineers lose on the vehicle's suspension and a host of exterior and interior tweaks help set both the coupe and convertible models apart from the rest of their pack.
The M Sport Edition features a set of 18-inch lightweight alloy wheels of its very own, and shadow line window finishers join a body-color rear diffuser. Indoors, an M Sport steering wheel and stainless pedals are standard equipment, as are Dakota leather seats with blue contrast stitching. Let's hope these two specials make it to North America. Rossi hoped for better at Mugello
Valentino Rossi admitted after qualifying 12th at Mugello that he had hoped Ducati's problems would be less apparent at its home track. With Rossi a seven-time winner at the circuit in MotoGP and Ducati having tested its 2012 bike - an 800cc version of which Rossi is now using - at the track, there had been optimism that this weekend would see an upturn in Ducati's fortunes. Magnussen secures double pole
Kevin Magnussen claimed the first pole positions of his British Formula 3 career with two stunning late laps in today's qualifying session at the Nurburgring. The Dane, who also set the pace in free practice yesterday, produced a 1m53.311s best on his penultimate lap of qualifying to top the times, before setting a time less than a tenth slower on his final tour to claim the other pole on offer. Pedrosa confirms Mugello return
Dani Pedrosa has confirmed that he will return to MotoGP for this weekend's Italian Grand Prix, six weeks after breaking his collarbone at Le Mans. The Honda rider sustained the injury in a collision with Marco Simoncelli during the French round of the world championship, and then required a second operation to fix a further fragment of bone. "For weeks I've been wanting to write that I'm back to competition and I can finally do it," Pedrosa wrote in his blog for sponsor Repsol.

Power completes Mid-Ohio test
Will Power completed a test at Mid-Ohio after being cleared to drive again following his shunt in the Iowa 250 event last weekend. The Australian Penske driver suffered a mild concussion after crashing heavily at Turn 2 while attempting to lap Vitor Meira before half distance and was required to take a mandatory ImPACT (Immediate Post-concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) before being deemed fit to drive on the road course alongside team-mates Helio Castroneves and Ryan Briscoe.
