Report: Chrysler to take next-gen Viper back to Le Mans?

Mending a rift in motor racing is good for everybody. It was good for American open-wheel racing when the Champ Car and IndyCar Series put aside their differences to rejoin forces. And it will be good for sports car racing now that the FIA and the ACO are in the same corner.
Just as Indy is set to grow with new manufacturers participating, so is it expected of the new FIA World Endurance Championship. Toyota is one of the major automakers reportedly working on a new LMP1 program, and now reports indicate that the Chrysler Group could be preparing to rejoin endurance racing with a competition version of the upcoming next-generation Viper.
As you may recall, the original Viper bred the GTS-R that claimed overall wins in the Nürburgring 24 Hours and Rolex 24 at Daytona. It also scored back-to-back class wins at Le Mans in 1998, '99 and 2000, Sebring in 2000 and numerous others, including several titles in the FIA GT Championship and American Le Mans Series.
In bringing the next Viper back into the fold, Chrysler would look to challenge the likes of the Chevrolet Corvette C6.R, BMW M3 GT2 and Ferrari 458 GTC in the GTE category. That last bit would be particularly interesting, as the two companies are now corporate cousins under the Fiat umbrella.
The automaker has reportedly brought Riley Technologies, the chassis manufacturer behind eight years running of Grand Am champions, to evaluate the new Viper for competition potential. We'll be watching to see how this development unfolds.

Tyre choice did not hurt spectacle
Pirelli believes that even a more aggressive choice of tyres for the European Grand Prix may not have been enough to help make the Valencia race a thriller. The Italian tyre manufacturer elected to bring its more conservative medium compound this weekend because it wanted to run it in race conditions before the British GP - and the easier time that drivers had with tyre degradation helped contribute to a less exciting race that has been the case at other events this year.

Horner hopes Webber can match Vettel
Red Bull Racing is hopeful that Mark Webber can get himself into a position now to challenge Sebastian Vettel regularly for race victories, on the back of his strong showing in the European Grand Prix. Webber has struggled in the opening phase of the campaign to get the most out of Pirelli's new tyres - and the only time he has beaten Vettel in qualifying was at the Spanish GP when his team-mate's pace was hindered by a lack of KERS. Bentley's Mulliner division has created a set of carbon fiber enhancements for the new Continental GT. Penned by Raul Pires, who designed the car itself, the trim pieces are meant to weave a bit more aggression into a coupe that is already England's closest take on a motorized English bulldog.
Called the Classic Pack, the specification includes a splitter and intake strakes in front and a wing and diffuser out back, all in carbon fiber. Optional bits, such as the side mirror cowls and side "extension blades" are also carbon fiber, and the fender vent behind the front wheels is dark mesh with a CF bezel. Twenty-one-inch Elegant wheels complete the equipment list.
A price hasn't been mentioned, but think "spendy." Full details in the press release after the jump and in the included high-res image gallery.

In most racing series - as in most sports in general - a champion should have no trouble getting a new contract. In fact he ought to have every team with a budget beating a path to his door. But Indy is different that way.
Despite winning both the Indianapolis 500 and the IndyCar Series title in 2005, and scoring podiums every season since, Dan Wheldon couldn't find a full-time ride for this year's series. But he showed them all when he won the Indy 500 for a second time this year.
That's why series organizers have chosen Wheldon to test the all-new Dallara chassis that will be introduced to the IndyCar field next year. A proven talent with no other commitments, Wheldon hopes that the test drive regimen, coupled with his high-profile win, will help him secure a full-time drive for next season. At that point, he'll have more - if not the only - experience in the new car over any other driver in the series.

Kovalainen ?driving better than ever?
Heikki Kovalainen is confident he is in the form of his life with Lotus at the moment, and says he will keep working to make himself an even better driver. McLaren duo call for more performance
McLaren's Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button both called for the team to find more downforce on the car as soon as possible after they took disappointing fourth and sixth places in Valencia. Yamaha postpones first 1000cc test
Yamaha will not test the first version of its 2012 MotoGP bike until after the Czech Grand Prix in August. Rivals Honda and Ducati have already begun running versions of their new 1000cc bikes for next season's regulation change - with Ducati sufficiently far advanced to start racing its 2012 chassis with a 2011-spec 800cc engine from this weekend's Dutch GP. Schumacher: Podium out of reach
Michael Schumacher insists that Mercedes does not have the pace to challenge for a podium finish in the European Grand Prix despite setting the fourth fastest time during Friday practice. Schumacher, whose best lap was 0.347 seconds off pace-setter Fernando Alonso's Ferrari, believes that only luck would allow the MGP W02 to finish in the top three. Loix clinches Ypres victory
Freddy Loix won the Ypres Rally for the seventh time in his career with a dominant performance on his home round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge. The Belgian veteran was barely threatened throughout the two-day event, pulling clear of early rival Guy Wilks with a string of stage wins on Friday, and ultimately winning by over one and a half minutes as problems hit all the other main contenders. The result put Loix into the IRC championship lead, with pre-rally points leader Juho Hanninen not entered for this event.

Assembly Passes Transit Lockbox, Moves on to Governor
The transit lockbox bill, designed to prevent future raids on dedicated transit funds, has passed the State Assembly, according to the Assembly’s website. Having already passed the Senate, the legislation now only needs the signature of Governor Andrew Cuomo to become law.

Wild wreck sends car into woods at Road America
Driver Joe Foster briefly was hospitalized after a crash with Gunter Schaldach during a Grand Am race at Road America on Saturday that sent Schaldachs car flipping over a fence and into the woods. Schaldach said he was totally fine after the spectacular accident, but Foster was airlifted to a Milwaukee-area hospital.

Hot and slick Michigan International Speedway hosted Week Seven of the NASCAR iRacing.com Class A series, and for some sim racers it was a week to remember while, for others, it was something they want to forget. Grip was not easily found at the aging track, as most drivers fought very loose cars on the exit of the corners. However, this made the lives of people who found traction, that much more enjoyable. Eddie A. Smith turned a lot of heads this week, as he not only won every race he started, but led the way in points as well. 329 big ones for Smith gave him the top honors for the week, beating out NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship driver Brad Davies. FIM still confident Motegi is safe
Motorcycle racing's governing body, the FIM, says it will discuss the radiation situation in Japan next weekend - but sees no reason why the Japanese Grand Prix should be called off. Many MotoGP riders have expressed reservations about contesting the rescheduled Motegi race on 2 October as they are concerned about the dangers of potential radiation after the nuclear plant crisis that followed March's terrible earthquake and tsunami in the country.

Sheehan Doubles Up at Michigan
Steve Sheehan put on a show Tuesday night at Michigan International Speedway, winning his second straight NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship race in commanding fashion from Derek Wood and Richard Towler. Sheehan qualified on the pole and had the dominant car on a short run. That turned-out to be the winning combination as eight cautions flew during the 100 lap online race, making good short runs the key to a good finish. Some contenders, however, would find trouble on the extremely slick race track . . . Sheehan made good use of his pole position and sprinted into the lead at the start of the race.
