Rally Cross to be held outside on streets of LA for X Games 17

X Games 16 SuperRally - Click above for high-res image gallery

RallyCross and the X Games were made for one another, and X Games 17 will feature one of the coolest tracks ever. The games, which will run from July 28 through July 31, will include a first-ever rally street circuit in downtown Los Angeles.

Three-time rally gold medalist and Top Gear U.S. host Tanner Foust sounds pretty excited about the development, and we can't blame him. "Being in the car, ripping through streets, cranking the handbrake through intersections while door-to-door and jumping next to buildings is going to be truly epic! I can't wait!"

We're guessing ESPN can't wait either, as the shots from the competition will likely be awe-inspiring. And the sports news network will have the event very well covered, with 25 hours of high definition coverage and another 18 hours of 3D coverage.

And, of course, the X Games wouldn't be the X Games without dirt bikes, so you can expect plenty of Enduro X coverage. There will also be eight new Moto X competitions, which will take place inside The STAPLES Center. Sounds like a good time. Hit the jump to read over the ESPN press release, and check out our high-res image galleries below for some of the rally action from last year.

Hyundai quarterly profit up 46% to $1.75B

Hyundai has had a big year, and the results are showing in the form of healthy profits. According to BusinessWeek, the Korean automaker earned $1.75 billion in the first quarter, up 46 percent versus the first quarter of 2010. Overall revenue was up 21 percent to $17 billion.

Sales volume was higher as well, as the 922,000 units sold globally represented a nine percent increase. Much of that increase occurred in plants in the U.S. and China, where output climbed by 14 percent. A richer model mix also buoyed Hyundai's profits, as pricing per model rose by an impressive 14 percent in overseas markets and 2.5 percent in its Korean home market.

Hyundai's impressive quarterly performance helped rally stocks in Korea, and the automaker saw a 7.5 percent gain on the day. For the year, Hyundai's share price has risen a meteoric 44 percent.

Lexus Hatches A New Take On Responsible Performance

2011 Lexus CT 200h
2011 Lexus CT 200h - Click above for high-res image gallery

Armchair quarterbacks have been quick to charge Toyota with losing its engineering nerve, labeling it a brand content to churn out safe, middle-of-the-road milquetoast offerings for every segment in which it competes. Admittedly, this isn't the same company that once marketed a supercharged, mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive minivan shaped like a suppository, nor is it the same company that sold homologated rally specials alongside its workaday iron. But to say that there are no bold spirits in Toyota City just ain't so - just look at the bonkers LFA supercar, for goodness' sake.

But you needn't have a millionaire's bankbook to see that the Japanese automaker still has cheek to spare - just check out the 2011 Lexus CT 200h. Not only is Toyota's premium marque dipping its toes into America's compact luxury market - a segment that nobody but Mini has figured out how to make big dollars on - it's doing so with a hybrid, an expensive powertrain configuration that, Prius aside, only sells in marginal volumes.

Admittedly, Lexus has made no bones about the fact that it's squarely targeting Europe with the CT (a market where hatchbacks consistently do big business and "small premium" is not an oxymoron), but make no mistake, this is a brave bet. Lexus says it's gunning for 1,000 units a month - a small number in the grand scheme of things - but it's expecting the moon when compared to competitors like the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Volvo C30, which typically sell in the hundreds per month. Yet this bold bet is showing early signs of paying off. Thanks in part to heavy advanced marketing, Lexus cleared its decks of over twice that many units in March - 2,199 - the CT's first month on sale.

All-wheel drive finds favor with Lincoln buyers

2011 lincoln mkz

Audi may be the king when it comes to premium vehicles fitted with all-wheel drive. Lincoln, however, must be taking notes because its customers prefer their luxified-Fords with the four-wheel motion as well. Every model in the automaker's current lineup is available with all-wheel drive, and lots of folks are checking that particular box on the order form.

It seems 2011 will go down as Lincoln's assault on four powered wheels. So far this year, 72 percent of MKT customers have opted for AWD while 62 percent of those purchasing the MKX have done the same. Of course, as you move into the automaker's sedans these numbers begin to fall, which is to be expected. Still, 46 percent of MKS shoppers choose the all-wheel-drive version and a quarter of MKZ sedans purchased are prepped for bad-weather driving.

Let's not forget the Navigator (yep, they still make it), which gets all-wheel drive 62 percent of the time.

Lincoln is enjoying this shift in consumer desire, as all-wheel-drive vehicles command anywhere from $1,850 to $6,890 extra when compared to their non-AWD counterparts. Full press release from Lincoln after the jump.

New York Post columnist Steve Cuozzo, proponent of birther-style conspiracy theories about the growth of cycling in New York, might want to check out this YouTube clip that NYC DOT posted earlier this week, along with other information on how it conducts bike counts. It’s a time-lapse video of cyclists on the Brooklyn approach to [...]

Today Now! Fast Five screenwriter interview

With the debut of Fast Five just around the corner, The Onion sat down with its lead screenwriter, five-year-old Chris Morgan to get his take on the film. According to Morgan, the story brief for the movie was simple enough: "I wanted the cars to drive fast, and some of them to explode," he said.

It may seem like a childishly simple way to conceptualize a movie, but the same idea has held strong through a franchise that has irrevocably left its skidmarks on American pop culture. Morgan says he enjoyed almost total creative freedom on the latest Fast and the Furious project, and the final screen play was little altered from the original.

To get Morgan's full take on Fast Five and his impressions of the final product, check out the video after the jump.

The engineers and designers at Ford are hard at work on the next take for one of its largest crossovers. Our spy photographers have managed to snap a few photos of the 2013 Ford Flex ahead of its debut later this year, and from the looks of things, the vehicle will borrow more than a few styling cues from its platform-mate, the 2011 Explorer. Expect to see a more corporate face, complete with a new grille, angular headlights and a revised front fascia among other tweaks. Projector fog lights seem to have made their way to the option sheet for the first time and new wheels should also be available.

Out back, the 2013 Flex looks like it will make use of a restyled tail gate as well. So far, it's unclear exactly what sort of interior upgrades the three-row CUV will receive, though we'd feel comfortable in guessing that MyFord Touch will likely make an appearance in the cabin for the first time. In addition, Ford may pull some fuel economy tricks from the ether as well.

Peugeot expects ultra-close Le Mans

Peugeot motorsport boss Olivier Quesnel believes the Le Mans test day proved there will be very little to choose between his squad and arch-rival Audi in this year's race. Although Audi's new R18 TDI set the top two times yesterday, lead Peugeot runner Stephane Sarrazin was only just over 0.2 seconds off Tom Kristensen's 3m27.687s benchmark in third place

The more things change - or so the saying goes - the more they stay the same. Half a century after the originals graced the open roads and the auto shows of the early 1960s, two classic coachbuilt Alfa Romeos have been reborn in modern style. We're talking about the Alfa Romeo TZ and the Coda Tronca - the former now heading into its fourth iteration in the form of the TZ3 Stradale, and the latter just recently remade as the Spada Codatronca Monza. And now their progenitors are set to cross the auction block.

Regarded in the same light by Alfa aficionados as the 250 GTO is by the Ferrari faithful, the original TZ (so named for its tubular space frame and Zagato coachwork) made a remarkable 1-2-3-4 class finish upon its race debut at Monza in 1963, complimented the same year by class wins at Sebring, Le Mans and the Nürburgring as well as an outright win at the Alpine Rally the following season. Only 112 examples were made, and this particular model - chassis #750006 - was prepared by Autodelta (the same Alfa tuner still operating in the UK) and fully restored to its original 1964 Le Mans condition after single-family ownership of 23 years.
1962 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ
Likewise bodied by Zagato, this 1962 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ "Coda Tronca" (chassis #0184) is one of only 30 such examples made out of 200 total SZs. Its Kamm-tailed body gave it its name, a shape which its original designer Ercole Spada reprised for his eponymous modern Corvette-powered special and which led to the development of the aforementioned TZ.

Both of these historic examples feature DOHC four-cylinder engines (1.6 liters and 150 horsepower for the TZ, and 1.3 liters and 135 hp for the Coda Tronca) mated to five-speed manual transmissions. They're set to join the Bertone prototypes and the Art Deco classics at RM's forthcoming auction at Villa d'Este, where the TZ is expected to fetch €475,000-€575,000 ($690k-835k) and the Coda Tronca €260,000-€300,000 ($377k-435k). With their modern successors destined for the garages of the extremely fortunate, we could hardly imagine better stablemates to join them. Have a closer look at each in the galleries below and delve further into their histories in the backgrounders after the jump.

Ducati likely to wait on new chassis

Ducati is unlikely to debut its new MotoGP chassis at this weekend's Portuguese Grand Prix, despite testing the heavily-revised frame at Mugello this week. Neither Valentino Rossi nor Nicky Hayden have proved competitive in dry conditions this season, with Rossi's ninth place on the Spanish Grand Prix grid the team's best qualifying position so far and the Italian complaining of severe understeer from the Desmosedici GP11. Team manager Vito Guareschi believes that with only three days to go before the start of free practice at Estoril, time constraints will prevent an immediate change of chassis

Vintage Class A

For the first time this season, the NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series went road course racing, in wine country, USA, aka Sonoma. The ten turn, 1.99 mile Cup configuration of Infinion Raceway challenged online racers in ways they never thought possible, and brought new names to the front. Michael Conti led 50 of the 55 laps en route to winning the top split of the week, setting fast time in the process. Conti is known more as an oval racer, but showed his capabilities on road as he took the dominating win by 55 seconds over Neil Pearson. Kenny Humpe was on the grid, and as always a favorite to win, but was unable to connect and failed to complete a lap. PJ Stergios, Marcus Lindsey and Brad Wright were [...]

Michael ready to review Williams role

Williams technical director Sam Michael says that changes 'will' be made to the organisation to turn around its disappointing start to the season - and he has not ruled out moving to a different role or leaving the outfit totally if that is what is needed. The former title-winning outfit is enduring the worst start to a season in its Formula 1 history, with neither Rubens Barrichello nor Pastor Maldonado having scored a point in the first three races of the campaign.

Jackson wins destructive race three

Mat Jackson took Motorbase Performance's first victory with the Ford Focus in the reversed grid British Touring Car round at Donington Park this afternoon. The race was marred by several accidents, which started even before the pack got to the first corner, when the fast-starting Dave Newsham lost control of his Geoff Steel Racing BMW on the grass, spun and hit the Speedworks Motorsport Toyota Avensis of Tony Hughes. Poleman Alex MacDowall (RML Chevrolet Cruze) led into Redgate, but Tony Gilham's Triple 8 Engineering Vauxhall Vectra touched Tom Onslow-Cole's AmD Milltek VW Golf while squabbling over second

Lotus Elise and Exige Dead in U.S. This Summer, Leaving Only Evora Until Reinforcements Arrive

Because Toyota has stopped making the 2ZZ-GE four-cylinder engines that power them, U.S. versions of the Lotus Elise and Exige as we know them will cease production this summer. If that weren’t enough, Lotus’s waiver to build and sell the cars in the U.S. without smart airbags expires in August. We’re also told the cars [...]

Across the Pond

The inRacingNews Challenge took its penultimate round across the pond, spending this past week on the International layout of the famed Silverstone Circuit. Week 11 of 12 marked the online racing series’ third and final visit to the track, after the Pontiac Solstices and SpecRacer Fords took on the National layout in Week Four and Southern layout in Week Eight. With only one week left in the championship, it?s safe to say that most of the divisional championships are pretty well set, while season-long favorites Chris Hughson (Solstice) and Gabriel Tobar (Ford) should go home with the championships in their respective classes. Both celebrated with class-pacing weeks ? Tobar scoring 169 points after leading all 14 laps of his lone race victory and Hughson taking home a magnificent 209 by [...]

Conway charges to first Indy win

Mike Conway claimed his first IndyCar Series race victory with a late charge in Long Beach, despite tumbling down the order with a messy first pitstop. Long-time leader Ryan Briscoe and reigning champion Dario Franchitti had to settle for second and third, ahead of star rookie James Hinchcliffe, while Will Power was only 10th after a tangle with Penske team-mate Helio Castroneves
