lexus culinary team

Lexus is serious about food. The automaker sponsors Bravo's popular Top Chef Masters television series, and now it's decided to form a culinary dream team of its own. The luxury marque has announced the creation of the Lexus Culinary Masters, and its roster is filled with world-renowned restaurateurs and a couple of Iron Chef mainstays.

Making their debut team appearance at the Pebble Beach Food & Wine Festival will be the following celebrity chefs:
  • Michael Symon
  • Masaharu Morimoto
  • Daniel Boulud
  • Michael Ciarello
  • Dean Fearing
  • Christopher Kostow
The festival begins on April 28 and runs through May 1. As you might have guessed, Lexus is the main sponsor of the Pebble Beach Food & Wine Festival, and its Culinary Masters team will hold a series of tasting events over the course of the event. Of course, Lexus won't just gather up these sharp knives for just one event - it vows to include them in "multiple initiatives, including Lexus customer appreciation programs, charitable outreach, and multimedia productions."

Glock says fitness no issue for Sepang

Virgin Racing's Timo Glock is unconcerned that the recent surgical operation to remove his appendix could harm his preparation ahead of the Malaysian Grand Prix. Although Glock competed at the Australian Grand Prix without discomfort, suggestions in the paddock that the high speeds and stifling humidity indicative of the sweeping Sepang International Circuit could pose higher risks. The German was confident, however, that a few aches and pains wouldn't slow him down.

Crazy collection of concepts from Bertone to be auctioned by RM at Villa d'Este

1970 Lancia Stratos HF Zero by Bertone
1970 Lancia Stratos HF Zero from the Bertone Museum - Click above for high-res image gallery

You can't make an omelet, or so the saying goes, without breaking some eggs. So while it's unfortunate that the restructuring at Bertone means the dissolution of its museum collection, it also means that its contents are going up for auction. And they'll be crossing the block at no less fitting a location than Villa d'Este.

Those in the know will recognize Villa d'Este for the Concorso d'Eleganza held there every year, where the most gorgeous and rare of classic cars mingle with the finest concept cars unveiled throughout the year. This year's concours will mark the first time that RM Auctions will be holding an event at the open-air show on picturesque Lake Como, and in addition to the myriad unspeakably beautiful classics on the docket, RM has just announced the consignment of six concept cars from the Bertone Museum, each one-of-a-kind in its own right and available to collectors for the first time.

The consignment includes the 1967 Lamborghini Marzal, 1970 Lancia Stratos HF Zero, 1963 Chevrolet Testudo, 1974 Lamborghini Bravo, 1980 Lamborghini Athon and 1978 Lancia Sibilo. Each was a seminal design for Bertone, and each is expected to fetch well into the six and even seven figures. The Marzal, particularly, which was driven by Prince Ranier and Princess Grace at the start of 1967 Monaco Grand Prix, and the Stratos, the first prototype for the iconic supercar rally machine of the same name, are expected to sell for between €1,000,000 and €1,800,000... that's as much as $2.5 million apiece in equivalent American funds.

Have a look at the collection (sans the Lancia Siblio, images for which are en route) in the high-resolution image gallery below, and follow the jump for the full details in the press release. Hat tip to Sea Urchin!

Lundberg?s Dutch Courage

Week Eight of the iRacing.com V8 Supercar Series headed to the Dutch seaside and the Grand Prix configuration of Circuit Park Zandvoort. A fitting layout, since the real world had just seen the opening Grand Prix for 2011 in Australia. In fact, it was a miracle so many Aussie sim racers had time to qualify, in between being glued to their TVs or being trackside at Albert Park in Melbourne. In the end, local boy Mark Webber hadn’t fared so well in his home Grand Prix, so the sim racers were out in numbers to reclaim some national pride in Split One of Race One for the Monday night event. And although de la Rosa has recently signed a reserve driver deal with McLaren, Pirelli has made no secret of the fact that it wanted the Spaniard to run one last time at a private test because he has the most knowledge of its preparations

Porsche 911 as School Bus
Porsche's latest commercial - Click above to watch after the jump

Company: Porsche Cars North America

Brand: Porsche

Medium: TV

Ad Agency: Cramer/Krasselt, Chiacgo.

Product: 911, Cayman

Campaign: Engineered For Magic. Everyday.

What We Like: The soundtrack, and the depiction of people using their Porsche sports cars for everyday driving and living is a nice change of pace for the brand and the ad work. We especially like the scene of the 911 trudging through snow, which it does with great aplomb thanks to a superior all-wheel-drive system. Porsches are seen as indulgences for men mostly that are often kept in garages under tarps when the snow falls. I'm not sure I would ever load mulch into a Cayman, but we do like the idea of the kids getting picked up from school. The yellow paint job for that 911 was a lovely touch by the ad creatives.

What We Don't Like: Not too much, though there is a bit of the strategy showing. The economy is still about as zippy as a Smart Fortwo and there's much talk about the lines and definition of luxury changing to more value and sensibility, all of which makes this campaign seem a little defensive to us.

Strategy: Porsches is not as impractical as you think. They can be great in the snow. You can get enough mulch in one to fill one of those upside-down tomato growers that hangs on your condo patio. A 911 can carry two small kids in the backseat, provided they are not part of the national obesity problem. We think Porsches, especially the 911, are fabulous sets of wheels that anyone would be proud to own for maximum driving excitement and brand appeal. But practical? Not on your Nellie.

Grade: B+

Spy Shots: All-wheel-drive Mini Cooper hybrid caught weathering the arctic

hybrid mini cooper spy shot
AWD Mini Cooper Hybrid Spy Shots - Click above for high-res image gallery

Once you've put an all-electric drivetrain into a Mini Cooper, is it that hard to hybridize one? Well, yes, especially since BMW's limited testing program was intended to give the company information about a plug-in architecture. But our spy photographers have discovered what's believed to be the first Mini Cooper prototype fitted with a hybrid drivetrain.

The body certainly looks the same, but - as you can see in our high-resolution gallery - BMW has affixed a sticker in the window that clearly says "hybrid test vehicle." We don't know many details about the powertrain sitting under the bright red paint, but sources indicate that this is a through-the-road hybrid, with the front wheels powered by a normal engine and the rear wheels motivated by an electric motor. Things like displacement, total horsepower and battery size are all as mysterious as they ever were, but rumor has it - no, really this time - that a hybridized Mini will be available when the next-generation arrives in 2013.

Petrov: Podium proves car?s quality

Vitaly Petrov believes his third place in the Australian Grand Prix is an indication of what the 2011 Renault is capable of, though he admitted he was not sure quite how good the car was before the race. The Russian qualified an impressive sixth, grabbed fourth at the start, and then secured third by making his tyres last through a two-stop strategy while main rivals Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso pitted three times. "I am happy to be here sitting with these guys," said Petrov after joining Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton on the podium

The Toyota FT-86 II concept brings us one step closer to a production rear-wheel-drive Toyota that promises to be fun to drive and great looking at the same time. We don't have a whole lot in the way of hard specs, but we do have plenty of high resolution pictures of a really hot-looking concept.

Toyota trotted out its black beauty in front of the all-seeing camera lens for an in-depth studio shoot, and we've got the pictures to prove it. Check out full compliment of high-resolution photos in the gallery below, then hit the jump to check out the video of the Sports Illustrated Swim Suit-style photo shoot. If the production FT-86 looks this good, we can't wait for hit to hit news stands dealers everywhere.

Wheldon to race for Herta at Indy

Former IndyCar champion Dan Wheldon has announced that he will race for Bryan Herta Autosport in this year's Indianapolis 500. Wheldon parted company with Panther Racing at the end of last season and does not currently have a full-time drive. He and Herta were team-mates at what was then Andretti Green Racing from 2003 to 2005, with Wheldon winning the Indy 500 and series title in the last of those seasons.

Power takes St Petersburg pole

Will Power started his 2011 IndyCar title bid with another commanding street course pole position in St Petersburg. The 2010 series runner-up had been quickest in two out of three practice sessions, and after his Penske team-mate Ryan Briscoe and Ganassi's Scott Dixon briefly held provisional pole in the 'fast six' final session, Power produced the fastest lap of the weekend to take pole with a 1m01.962s. Two Ganassi cars will chase Power off the start, with champion Dario Franchitti shrugging off a morning practice crash to get closest to the Australian with a lap 0.3328 seconds away from pole and 0.1s ahead of team-mate Dixon

Meet the 203-foot truck on its way to save Fukushima's No. 4 reactor

Sany pumper truck

Japan has turned to its neighbor across the water for help in cooling the number four reactor at the Tokyo Electric Company's nuclear power plant in Fukushima. So far, scientists and engineers have used everything from helicopters to fire trucks to get sea water to the reactor's fuel rods in order to prevent a meltdown, but according to China Realtime Report, a Wall Street Journal blog, a new solution is in the works. A 203-foot long concrete pumper truck has been called up from Chinese heavy equipment manufacturer Sany.

Instead of directing a stream of concrete up a sky scraper, this $1 million truck that was originally on its way to a Saudi client will now be used to pump sea water over the 141-foot reactor group in order to keep everything cool. Even at that height, the truck will still be able to remain 14 meters, or about 46 feet, away. Sany says that the truck left port in China on March 20 and has safely reached Japan, though there's no word on whether or not it has begun operations at Fukushima.

Tokyo Electric Company originally offered to purchase the truck, but Sany is donating it and a full support team free of charge, and this isn't the first time that the construction equipment manufacturer has lent a hand in international disaster efforts. The company also donated a giant crane to assist in the evacuation of the Chilean miners who were trapped in a mine last year.

Unfortunately, the very latest update from Japan is that Fukushima's No. 3 reactor is leaking water with 10,000 times the normal level of radiation, which may indicate a breach of the reactor's core. If that's the case, there's no telling how the Sany pump truck will be used when it arrives on site, or if it will be needed at all.
