Gordon ends win drought at Phoenix
Jeff Gordon ended a 66-race win-less streak by beating Kyle Busch to victory in Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix. "Pinch me!" said Gordon while jumping off his trademark #24 Chevrolet in Victory Lane after finally getting back to his winning ways, claiming his 83rd career victory one year, 10 months and 22 days after winning for the last time at NASCAR's top level. The 39-year-old led a race-high 138 laps but following the final restart with 22 laps remaining, he had to chase the leading Toyota of Busch, who passed Tony Stewart for the lead shortly after the green flag waved for the last time.

As part of its 2011 Geneva Motor Show festivities, Volkswagen is letting us loose behind the wheel of its range-topping Golf R, set to arrive in United States as a 2012 model. Production of the Stadeside-spec car begins at the automaker's Wolfsburg plant this November, and we've just learned how different our version of the Golf R will be from the model that's already on sale in Europe.
Don't worry - we're still getting the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to the company's fourth-generation Haldex 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. But while the European car cranks out 270 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, Volkswagen tells us that the U.S. car will produce something closer to 256 hp and 243 lb-ft (not yet confirmed). Still, that's 56 hp and 36 lb-ft more than the standard GTI, and since the Golf R is estimated to weigh around 3,300 pounds - 250 pounds lighter than the most recent R32 - the end result should be quite lively. Volkswagen is estimating that 0-62 mile-per-hour times will fall somewhere in the 5.7- to 5.9-second range.
As we reported earlier, the Golf R will only be offered with a six-speed manual transmission when it hits our shores. European cars can be had with Volkswagen's slick-shifting DSG unit, and we must admit, not offering the twin-clutch setup in the States seems like a curious omission, especially when you consider that the take rate on DSG in the less powerful GTI is around 50 percent. Still, Volkswagen says that its research with different enthusiast groups and dealers suggests that the vast majority of U.S. consumers have been clamoring for a row-your-own Golf R, and since the automaker had to keep the number of build options to a minimum in order to get the vehicle approved for American consumption, manual-only was the way they decided to go.

The Williams team unveiled on Thursday its definitive colour scheme for the 2011 season The Grove-based squad unveiled its 2011 challenger, the FW33, earlier this month and has been running with an interim livery during winter testing. Blake's Takes: NASCAR's Fuel Injection? Well, It's a Start

To me, the most exciting announcement to come out of Speed Weeks was in a bulletin released by NASCAR the Thursday before qualifying.
Or was it? We'll get to that later.
The news was that NASCAR, in a major break from the stock cars of 1948, finally decided to adopt fuel injection for its racing engines, replacing the venerable (and largely obsolete) carburetors, the primary device for mixing air and fuel on internal combustion engines since the dawn of time.
Problem is, all cars manufactured for street use in the United States (and just about everywhere else) began widespread of fuel injection in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The last factory-for-sale car to use a carburetor was a single model of the Subaru in 1991.
NASCAR's insistence on carburetor use was therefore mystifying, and evidence of the widening chasm between NASCAR and "stock" cars. Every other major form of motorsport uses some type of computerized mix-and-inject.
In fact, only one company makes the kind of carburetors used in NASCAR racing. The carbs therefore are pricey and require extensive machining in the team shops to make them work in specific applications.

The V8 virtual circus travelled to Sonoma and the Cup configuration of Infineon Raceway for Week Two of the iRacing V8 Supercar Series. The majestic rises and falls of the Sears Point track and the leery, oversteering nature of the Aussie beast- it’s almost as if they’re made for each other. For this, the early race, Michael McCabe was on pole from Mitchell McLeod. The pair of sim racers had been lightening fast in separate splits prior to this week which made it a delectable prospect for this top split. Trulli?s crash ends Lotus test early
Lotus has ended the final day of testing at Barcelona early after a car failure caused Jarno Trulli to crash this morning. The Italian lost control of the T128 in Campsa corner and hit the wall on the outside.

Alonso positive despite car troubles
Fernando Alonso remained upbeat after encountering his first reliability problems with the 2011 Ferrari. He had run trouble-free up until today, but was sidelined for two spells due to electrical and mechanical failures on the F150 Italia. Sandt Racking-Up Tour Modified Wins
The same driver, same state with a different track produced a similar story in the third week of online racing competition in the NASCAR iRacing Tour Modified series in 2011. Untamed Motorsports driver Robert Sandt poured the pressure on his fellow sim racers by capturing seven wins at the Richmond International Raceway and would be relentless as the tour headed to South Boston Speedway. Sandt, the fast qualifier for the week led the eighty-nine other drivers in the win column at ?SoBo? as he put down five victories at the tight oval. Lamborghini Aventador leaked ahead of Geneva reveal?

We received our first glance at its insides this morning, but the folks at WorldCarFans have stumbled upon what appears to be the first image of the completed Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. Set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show next week, the Aventador is Lambo's new Murciélago-replacing flagship supercar, and as its (still unconfirmed) name suggests, we can expect around 700 horsepower to be on tap, stemming from a brand new twelve-cylinder heart.We've seen dozens of spy shots of the Aventador, and all signs point to a very aggressive design. There are plenty of styling cues from the Sesto Elemento concept that debuted at the Paris Motor Show last Fall, and the end result is absolutely irresistible. Take down the Ferrari posters from your walls, kids - there's a new supermodel to drool over.
The rest of the Aventador's rumored specs are just as impressive. It'll sprint to 62 miles per hour in just 2.9 seconds, and it'll do 217 mph at the very top end. This sheer speed is the result of Lamborghini's new carbon fiber monocoque cell that weighs just under 325 pounds - in fact, the whole body-in-white tips the scales at just 505 pounds. Even when the drivetrain and interior bits are bolted in, this new Lambo should be seriously lightweight (for a car its size, anyway).
Expect the full details on the all-wheel-drive Aventador LP700-4 to be revealed in the coming days, and we'll get our first in-person glimpse at the new hotness next week. Get ready. Top tip, Sean!

Darrell Waltrip, Mike Joy of FOX Fire Back at Tony Kornheiser

It's a safe bet that you won't be seeing Darrell Waltrip holding hands with Tony Kornheiser and singing "Kum Ba Yah" anytime soon, not that you were likely to anyway.But the chances got even more remote when, during his show, "Pardon The Interruption," Kornheiser said Tuesday he had spoken to someone who said there was a "60 percent" chance that Dale Earnhardt, Jr. had qualified and won the pole position for Sunday's Daytona 500 with a car that was not up to code and that NASCAR officials had looked the other way.
Needless to say, Waltrip, a FOX race analyst, took umbrage with Kornheiser's off the cuff statements and said so during a conference call to promote Daytona coverage Thursday.
