2012 Fiat 500 U.S. Spec ? First Drive Review

The American-market Cinquecento proves just as engaging as the European one.
Fiat is reentering the U.S. market in a sector that is booming and the opposite of boring, and into which its infiltrator fits perfectly. Small-car segments are growing fast, and some of the most daring bodies in the business are among the smallest: the Nissan [...]

Audi tests new R18 at Sebring

Audi has tested two of its brand new R18 LMP1 cars at Sebring, although it still plans to use an updated R15 in the 12 Hours at the circuit in March. All nine members of Audi's Le Mans line-up drove both types of car during the tests, which concluded on Saturday. Team boss Dr Wolfgang Ullrich said Sebring had been selected mainly for weather reasons.

Lotus to start season without KERS

Team Lotus has confirmed that it will not use KERS at the start of the 2011 season, though it reckons it could add the energy recovery device at a later stage if necessary. Chief designer Lewis Butler said his team had decided that KERS would have forced too many compromises in other areas of the design. "The decision not to use KERS made the design job slightly easier, because packaging it in the car is always a bit more of a headache," he said

Kubica cautious on Renault?s chances

Robert Kubica says it is too early to judge how competitive Renault will be in 2011, although the Pole feels the team is better prepared than last year. The team was one of the positive surprises of 2010, with Kubica fighting near the top in several races and achieving three podium finished on his way to eighth place in the championship. And although team bosses said they goal is to start winning races again, Kubica is refusing to get carried away.

Ganassi takes Daytona one-two

Chip Ganassi Racing secured its fourth Daytona 24 Hours victory in six years with a one-two finish in the 2011 edition of the race. Ganassi's #01 Riley-Ford MKXI/XX driven by Scott Pruett, Memo Rojas, Joey Hand and Graham Rahal crossed the line just two seconds ahead of its sister car. Scott Dixon, who shared the second Ganassi entry with Juan Pablo, Dario Franchitti and Jamie McMurray, was unable to exploit a late-race safety-car period, which turned the race into a one-lap sprint to the flag.

Mazda to supply Nissan with its own version of Mazda5

Mazda has officially announced that it will supply the Mazda5 minivan to Nissan beginning in May of this year. But before you go dreaming of a Nissan micro-minivan here in the United States, know that this will be a Japan-only affair. As of this writing, mum's the word on what the Nissan-badged Mazda will be called in the automaker's home market. The Mazda5, or Premacy as it's known in Japan, will "enrich [Nissan's] minivan lineup in the Japanese market" - a place where small MPVs are sold in great volume.

This is not the only collaboration between Mazda and Nissan in Japan. Currently, Mazda provides its Bongo Van/Truck to Nissan under the name Vanette. Likewise, Nissan supplies its AD/AD Expert to Mazda, sold under the name Familia Van. Follow the jump for the official press release.

Fiat 500 to have no-haggle sticker pricing?

Fit 500 U.S.
2012 Fiat 500 - Click above for high-res image gallery

Haggling, ugh. Generally speaking (and with a few notable exceptions) it's one of those unavoidable aspects of buying a new car from a dealership. If you're good and you're willing to shop around by pitting dealer against dealer, you may end up scoring something of a bargain. Thing is, if you're not such a good haggler, you're seemingly just as likely to pay more from a stealership than the next guy, which hardly seems fair.

According to Fiat's brand spankin' new United States arm, the younger car-buying generation isn't particularly keen on the notion of haggling for a better price. As such, the company has directed its dealerships to adopt a no-haggle pricing policy, starting with the new-for-the-U.S. Fiat 500. "The pricing is the pricing," said Laura Soave, head of the Fiat brand in North America to Bloomberg, much as it was with the now defunct Saturn brand. We think it's a lovely idea and hope it sticks.

Steve Wallace to Make Sprint Cup Debut in Daytona 500

Nationwide regular Steve Wallace, 23, will make his Sprint Cup debut in the 53rd running of the Daytona 500 driving a Toyota Camry fielded by his famous father, Rusty, the family team announced Wednesday.

Steve Wallace will become the fourth Wallace to run in the annual NASCAR classic, joining his father and uncles Mike and Kenny.

A regular in the Nationwide series since 2007 with Rusty Wallace Racing, Steve Wallace will drive the No. 77 RWR Toyota Camry in the Feb. 20 race with backing from longtime sponsor 5-Hour Energy and new partner Aspen Dental.

Wallace has a guaranteed starting spot in the 43-car field because his father's longtime car owner, Roger Penske, has a spot earned from Sam Hornish, Jr's 2010 full-season campaign in Penske's No. 77 Dodge. Penske does not have a Cup ride for Hornish in 2011.

"Starting my first Daytona 500 is definitely going to be the most exciting day of my career -- make that my life -- so far," Wallace said in a post at rustywallace.com. "It's something that every kid wanting to be a racer -- including me -- dreams of doing one day.

2012 Ferrari FF Official Photos and Info ? Auto Shows

The theme of a Ferrari shooting brake has inspired coachbuilders for a long time. Here, finally, is the first official one.
The four-seat Ferrari 612 Scaglietti is a great car, but not our favorite Ferrari. Launched in 2004, it?s getting long in the tooth, and the curvaceous body, lacking in tension, never really grew on us.

NASCAR Drivers Must Declare for One Championship in 2011

NASCAR
drivers will have to declare which championship they want to contend for in 2011 -- choosing to earn championship points in only one of the three national touring series, Sprint Cup, Nationwide or the Camping World Truck Series, according to a posting from NASCAR's official Twitter account late Monday night.

NASCAR President Mike Helton will be addressing the media in a "competition update" on Jan. 21 during the open test session at Daytona International Speedway and there was no official statement regarding the format change. However, NASCAR.com is reporting that veteran driver Kenny Wallace confirmed the change in policy after receiving his 2011 licensing agreement from NASCAR last week.

According to Wallace, drivers are asked to place a check next to the series of their choice, meaning that while they may compete in multiple series, the days are gone for a Cup driver to also run for the Nationwide title and/or truck series title. Cup driver Brad Keselowski (above), for example, is the reigning Nationwide Series champion and will have to decide whether to defend his title or stay eligible to try to make the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

It is still unclear how the points will be awarded to drivers competing in multiple series, but that issue and possible changes to the Cup series' Chase playoff format are both expected to be addressed next week in NASCAR's competition update news conference.

NASCAR Chairman Brian France has said repeatedly this season that he was open to changing the format in the Nationwide Series to better showcase the up-and-coming Nationwide Series-only drivers and to entice and reward teams to compete in NASCAR's triple-A series. And he has also hinted that he's open to "tweaking" the Chase format it he felt it would significantly improve the playoff feel.

Rome gives up on F1 race plans

Rome has now officially given up on its plans to hold a Formula 1 street race - as the Italian city says its efforts are now switching to securing the Olympics. After months of speculation about whether a grand prix could be put on in Rome's streets, the hopes of an event were dashed a few weeks ago when Bernie Ecclestone wrote a letter to organisers stating that no country would be allowed to hold two races in their country. With Monza already having a long-term deal to host the Italian Grand Prix, that all but killed off Rome's hopes of landing a race.

NASCAR President Mike Helton Confirms Points System Change Imminent

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR President Mike Helton, Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton and Sprint Cup Series director John Darby held a competition update news conference Friday at Daytona International Speedway, confirming that the sanctioning body is looking at a "simpler" points system that would be introduced in all three national series for the 2011 season.

Speaking to reporters during downtime from a three-day preseason test session at the Daytona Beach track, the trio spoke on a wide range of issues. First, Helton made the news official that drivers must now select only one of the three national series to earn points toward a championship. He also indicated NASCAR was considering changes to the 1, 3 and 7:30 p.m. race start times introduced this past year.

Pemberton said that the proposed fuel injection systems would not be used this season but are progressing well in tests and Darby explained that the introduction of ethanol to fuel this year was actually an easier transition than when NASCAR switched from leaded to unleaded fuel in 2008.

The hot topic, unquestionably, was a change to the points system -- which would be the first since NASCAR formed in 1958 -- even if none of the officials would confirm what the new format might look like.

"We're in the middle of the conversations, telling the competitors where our mind is,'' Helton said. "The goal for some time is to create a points system that is easy to understand, easy to explain, easy to talk about but also be credible at the end of the season. So it's a function of taking the current one that has established credibility and come up with one that you can sit and have a conversation with someone and they say, 'well, that's pretty simple.' ''

"We're close. And we're getting a lot of good feedback from the drivers about tweaks that would go into that.''
